Bergen Walking Tour - 3 hours

Bergen may perhaps be a relatively small city (population of 260,000) however it is overflowing with history (the first settlement here were over 900 years ago), culture, incredible nature, gourmet restaurants and cosy cafe’s
Bryggen, the ancient Hanseatic Wharf, which is one of the best known European dwelling places from the Middle Ages, comprises a maze of characteristic wooden buildings with pointed gables facing the harbour.

This unique architectural gem is now listed by UNESCO as one of the world's most significant examples of the history and culture of a medieval settlement. Ålesund Walking Tour – 3 Hours

Ålesund differs from most other Norwegian cities with its large concentration of buildings in the Jugend style of architecture. The explanation for this is simple; the town burned to the ground during the Great Fire of 1904. Rebuilding the city took a full three years, aided by numerous local contributions and large donations from the German Kaiser Wilhelm II.
The city planners agreed on consistently using the contemporary style of architecture, Jugend style (also known as Art Nouveau). It is a style characterized by artistic playfulness, fetching inspiration from organic forms and shapes in nature.
This combination of fjords, mountains and a town centre built in so-called art nouveau-style are some of the factors that resulted in Ålesund pinching first place in a survey by the Norwegian daily newspaper Dagbladet. Larger cities like Bergen (second place) and Trondheim (fourth place) – perhaps more famous for their beauty – were not considered to be as scenic as Ålesund when the Norwegians themselves cast their votes.
Walking tour through the winding old city streets, you will learn about the town's historic past. The tour takes in the Art Nouveau houses in the town itself, taking a stroll in the magnificent central district that displays beautiful houses with numerous and elaborate towers, spears and ornaments.

This section of the voyage brings us to the Trøndelag region of Norway, marked by crumpled hills, fields dotted with farmsteads, and low-lying coastal settlements. Magical, medieval, and modern, Trondheim was founded by Viking King Olav Tryggvason in 997 AD and is now Norway's third-largest city. It features a mix of historic buildings and a lively student population. You'll have three hours to explore Trondheim and its various highlights, either on your own or on one of our optional excursions. Kristiansund city tour and drive along the Atlantic road – 4 hours
The Atlantic Road is an absolute must see for those vising Kristiansund area. This unique section of road that takes you right out to the ocean’s edge and it is located only 30 mins away from Kristiansund. The road was voted Norway’s ’Engineering Feat of the Century’ and the British newspaper The Guardian called it ‘the world´s best road trip’.
The tour starts with a sightseeing tour of Kristiansund. You will enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the city from Varden Viewpoint and pass by Vanndammen and Kirkeland church. The church was designed by the architect Odd Østby on the theme "Rock Crystals In Roses ". Consecrated in 1964, this is perhaps Norway's most daring church building: when light flows through the 320 colour glass windows in all shades of red and yellow, the 30-metre high chancel wall is transformed into a symphony of colours.

The tour continues through the modern Atlantic tunnel to Averøy. Along the road you will see agricultural land and small villages on the lush island of Averøy before the landscape becomes more open as we approach the Atlantic Road. Once we get there, we will of course take our time to take photos and admire the dramatic scenery of the coast and the road.
We will also stop at Bud fishing village and see Kvernes stave church from the outside. Kvernes is one of Norway’s youngest stave churches, dating from the 14th century. This church is situated on a hill that offers great views of the Kvernesfjord.

Leaving Tromsø in the early evening, we'll head north for the trading post of Skjervøy, founded in 1622. On our way, we'll pass the Lyngen Alps, which rise majestically from the sea. We dock in Harstad just after 7 am. Feel free to have a peaceful early morning stroll around town. The ship will then continue to Finnsnes, which connects the beautiful island of Senja via the impressive Gisund Bridge. Keep your eyes peeled for a variety of seabirds, including puffins, as there are several colonies nearby. You may also spot whales in the waters here, especially during the winter season. Then, we'll sail to the historic Arctic exploration capital of Tromsø, where you'll have four hours to explore the city or join an optional excursion. You'll find Polaria (the world's northernmost aquarium) and the nice waterfront. Pop in to one of the many shops and restaurants in the city center, including Mack Brewery and the Ølhallen pub, a favorite local watering hole. The ship reaches the town of Hammerfest on the island of Kvaløya early in the morning. In the summer, herds of reindeer migrate to the island by the thousands. You'll know we've reached Havøysund when you see the wind turbines of the landmark Havøygavlen wind farm, which produces enough electricity to power 6,000 local homes. In the mid-morning, we'll arrive at Honningsvåg, the gateway to the North Cape, where a globe monument marks the top of continental Europe. The optional excursion up to the dramatic promontory is very popular, so you'll want to book early. Near the entrance of the Kjøllefjord village, look out for the striking, building-like rock formation Finnkirka, an ancient sacrificial site once used by the indigenous Sámi. You can join an optional excursion to meet local Sámi, learn about their reindeer-herding life, and listen to joik folk songs. We'll reach our northernmost port of call, Mehamn, in the evening. If you're visiting during the months of February and March, you might spot cod drying on outdoor wooden racks, called hjell, mainly destined for export. The ship then sets off for Berlevåg. On the way, we'll pass the tall Slettnes Lighthouse, the planet's northernmost mainland lighthouse. We call at Båtsfjord and Vardø during the night, before docking at Vadsø early in the morning. The area around Vadsø is one of the most scenic and popular birdwatching spots in the Arctic, lying directly under the migration path of birds flying from east to west. Watch for Hooded Crows and Sea Eagles. By the time we reach Kirkenes after breakfast, you'll have traveled farther east than St. Petersburg and Istanbul! You'll have many optional excursions to choose from to explore the area. Kirkenes is just a few miles from the Russian border. This neighbor has had many influences on Norway, from road signs in both Norwegian and Russian to a monthly Russian market and the World War II Russian Monument. The journey's turning point is Kirkenes, where the Norwegian Coastal Express changes direction and the ship heads south. Several of the places we stopped at during the night we'll now see during the day. Back in Vardø, visit the solemn Witches' Monument and the star-shaped Vardøhus Fortress, built in 1737. The northernmost fortification of any kind, it remains in use by the military to this day. We'll return to the small, bustling port of Båtsfjord and then make for Berlevåg in the late evening, crossing paths with the northbound ship. Time in port: Båtsfjord: 12:00 am to 12:30 am, Vardø: 03:30 am to 03:45 am, Vadsø: 06:55 am to 07:10 am, Kirkenes: 9:00 am to 12:30 pm, Vardø: 04:05 pm to 05:00 pm, Båtsfjord: 08:00 pm to 08:30 pm, Berlevåg: 10:25 pm to 10:35 pm.,

We make stops at Mehamn and Kjøllefjord during the night before early-morning visits to Honningsvåg and Havøysund. In the early afternoon, you'll spend time in Hammerfest, once the northernmost town in the world (until Longyearbyen in Svalbard claimed the title). Check out the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Meridian Column, shop for souvenirs at the Polar Bear Society, or take the path behind the town to the viewpoint on Mount Salen. We'll continue cruising Norway's coastline south to Øksfjord and then continue to Skjervøy, surrounded by mountain peaks. We've been docking at this vital fishing port since 1896. If you're visiting in the winter, you might spot the orcas and humpback whales that gather here to feed on herring. As we make our way to Tromsø, you might also glimpse views of the Lyngen Alps, which boast some of the highest peaks in all of Norway. We dock at Tromsø just before midnight. In the summer months, stroll the still-busy city in glorious 24-hour daylight. You can also book an excursion for a midnight boat ride around the city or attend a candlelit classical concert at the Arctic Cathedral. Time in port: Mehamn: 01:20 am to 01:30 am, Kjøllefjord: 03:25 am to 03:35 am, Honningsvåg: 05:45 am to 06:00 am, Havøysund: 08:00 am to 08:15 am, Hammerfest: 11:00 am to 12:45 pm, Øksfjord: 03:50 pm to 04:05 pm, Skjervøy: 07:30 pm to 7:45 pm, Tromsø: 11:45 pm to 01:30 am.,

Tromso 11/30/2024

On this day, you'll be exploring the archipelagos of Lofoten and Vesterålen, true highlights of our scenic Norwegian route. After a call at Finnsnes in the early morning, the ship calls at Harstad. Here lies the world's northernmost medieval stone church: the white-washed Trondenes Church. Next we'll stop at Risøyhamn, our smallest port of call. Then, it's off to Sortland, where the landscape slowly transforms from hills to mountains towering over 3,280 feet high. Our birthplace Stokmarknes is where captain Richard With launched The Norwegian Coastal Express in 1893. Visit Hurtigrutemuseet, a building resembling a ship in a bottle. It chronicles the Hurtigruten legacy, centered around retired ship MS Finnmarken from 1956. Sailing along Raftsund, the Captain may choose to take the ship into the tiny Trollfjord. The mountain walls will look so close, you'll think you can reach out and touch them! To exit the fjord, the ship will rotate 180 degrees in a single spot, then sail back out. Remember to look out for sea eagles here, too. We'll reach Svolvær in the evening. The huge mountain that sits above the town is named the 'Svolvær Goat', due to its supposed resemblance. The ship then sails to Stamsund, eventually passing the giant granite cliffs of the Lofoten Wall. Time in port: Tromsø: 11:45 pm to 01:30 am, Finnsnes: 04:20 am to 04:40 am, Harstad: 08:00 am to 08:30 am, Risøyhamn: 10:45 am to 11:00 am, Sortland: 12:30 pm to 01:00 pm, Stokmarknes: 02:15 pm to 03:15 pm, Svolvær: 06:30 pm to 08:30 pm, Stamsund: 10:15 pm to 10:30 pm.,

The ship will call at Bodø in the wee hours of the morning and then at Ørnes at 7 am. Then, we'll cross over the Arctic Circle just after breakfast. We'll commemorate the moment with the time-honored tradition of tasting a spoonful of cod liver oil. Next, we'll make a short stop at Nesna before sailing on to Sandnessjøen, the gateway to the magnificent Helgeland Coast. Admire the stunning landscape of the Seven Sisters mountain range, with peaks stretching up to 3,600 feet. According to legend, seven beautiful troll princesses were caught outside as the sun rose as they fled from an unwanted suitor. The sun turned them into the seven beautiful mountains you see today. Don't miss the distinctive hole passing straight through Torghatten Mountain! There is also a local legend as to how the mountain came to have such a hole. Make sure you ask your Coastal Expert about it! We'll reach Brønnøysund in mid-afternoon. Explore the bustling marina on a walk along Havnegata. In the center of town is Brønnøy Church, a Neo-Gothic style stone church dating back to 1870. Our last stop of the day is the cozy fishing port of Rørvik in the picturesque Vikna Archipelago. Kristiansund city tour and drive along the Atlantic road – 4 hours
The Atlantic Road is an absolute must see for those vising Kristiansund area. This unique section of road that takes you right out to the ocean’s edge and it is located only 30 mins away from Kristiansund. The church was designed by the architect Odd Østby on the theme "Rock Crystals In Roses ".

We drive out of the city centre to Troldhaugen, the home of the famous Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. The home, an unassuming wooden house stands amongst the trees at the Hill of the Trolls (Troldhaugen).
Then it is a short drive to the Fantoft Stave Church, originally built in Fortun Sogn in 1150, it was relocated to Fantoft in 1883 where it was rebuilt after it was destroyed in a fire in 1992. In the Middle Ages there were approximately 800 stave churches throughout Norway, today only 30 are left standing.
On return back to the city centre of Bergen, explore by foot the famous Bryggen harbour front - the colorful old Hanseatic merchant buildings from the middle Ages. Destroyed by a large fire that wreaked havoc, the area was rebuilt in 1702. Now a protected area and listed on the Unesco World Heritage List, the narrow alleyways that run between the rows of houses made for an enchanting stroll that will take you back in time.

Your next stop is the Mt. Fløien Funicular station. The Fløibanen funicular takes you up to a height of 320 meters above sea level. It is a short journey up, on exit of the funicular a magnificent panorama over the city of Bergen, the surrounding mountains and sea awaits you. Return back to the harbor front district by funicular. Some free time has been set aside for you to peruse the Fish and Flower market at the Marbour front.

Bergen Art & Design Walking Tour visiting KODE Art Museum and Arven silver factory – 4 hours
You start this walking tour with our guide, visiting two of the main attractions in Bergen for art and design lovers.

We will pay a visit to KODE 3 Museum, which The Rasmus Meyers Collection and a great compilation of works by Edvard Munch, one of the most renowned Norwegian painters.
Among the highlights of the collection are paintings from the Golden Age of Norwegian art, as well as historical interiors from the Bergen area. The presentation includes highlights from the careers of other famous Norwegian artists such as J.C. Dahl, Harriet Backer, Erik Werenskiold and Gerhard Munthe.

We continue our tour by visiting Arven´s workshops. In 1868 Theodor Olsen brought international expertise when he established his own sterling silversmithery and store and quickly became a leader in Bergen’s arts and crafts community. Following his death in 1890, the silver smithery and store continued under the name of Theodore Olsen managed by the Aase family for many generations until 2016 when it became Arven AS. Today, Arven is a modern and innovative factory which is constantly developing new and exciting products through bold design work in cooperation with contemporary designers but preserving traditional techniques and classic design.
During your private visit you will be greeted by your host offering you a special welcome with a drink and a taste of delicious Norwegian local produce cheese and snacks, all served using their beautiful cheese slices and knives we create.
Your visit continues with a presentation about the story of silversmithing in Bergen, about Arven, our history, our products, and our way of working. Afterwards there will time for your questions and participation to “show and tell” how each visitor can make their own stamped pendant!
You are then guided to our workshop and witness where our silver cutlery and jewelries are crafted. There will be a little “ceremony” in the workshop where each visitor gets their own Arven medal.

  • Electrical
Electrical outlets on the vessel are 220v AC. – 2 pin Continental-type, for which an adapter is required. Guests needing an adapter/converter, must bring their own.

  • Language
Norwegian and English are the official onboard languages. The personnel at the reception and some of the service crew may also speak German. Tour Leaders speak Norwegian, English, and German.

  • Medical Emergencies
There is no doctor or pharmacy on board. However, officers are trained in first aid and can provide emergency medical assistance. The ships are also close to land.

  • Safety Information
Hurtigruten ships are working vessels operating a regular service to a set timetable. The ships carry goods, vehicles, and passengers between ports, by night and day, as an integral part of Norwegian daily life. Hurtigruten ships are calling at ports around the clock.

It is a safety requirement that all Hurtigruten passengers attend a compulsory safety briefing in Bergen before the ship leaves port. After check-in, and prior to embarkation, please go to the first floor of the terminal building where the safety briefing will be given at regular intervals by Hurtigruten staff. This briefing will last between 10 – 15 minutes with the first taking place at 3:45pm (embarkation is from 4pm, also from the first floor). The talk will include a demonstration of how to put on a life jacket, and the instructions to be followed in the unlikely event of an evacuation or other emergency during the voyage. The briefing is compulsory for all passengers including those who have traveled with Hurtigruten on previous occasions. There will be an opportunity to ask questions if you have any concerns. Guests may embark immediately upon completion of the safety briefing. The last briefing will take place at 7:30pm. Guests arriving after this time will be required to attend a safety meeting on board at 8pm, before the ship leaves Bergen.

Please take time to familiarize yourself with the emergency procedures as shown in the cabins (there is a diagram on the cabin door and in public areas), and ask at reception if in doubt.

In many ports there may be a good deal of activity on the quay with cars joining/ leaving the ships, and/or goods being loaded or unloaded. Please be alert to such traffic when embarking and disembarking. Take care during winter months when it is icy underfoot, particularly on the outside decks and when disembarking the ship or alighting from coaches. Ice spikes and other winter clothing can be purchased in the ship's store. Do not carry large amounts of cash and keep valuable items, including mobile telephones and cameras, out of sight.

  • Smoking Policy
Smoking is only permitted in designated areas on the outside decks. It is not permitted when the ships are in port and fueling. The staff will advise when it is not allowed to smoke outside. Smoking in the cabins is prohibited and subject to a fine.

  • Special Dietary Needs - Advance Notice Required
If you have special dietary requests, please inform Hurtigruten at the time of booking. They will do their best to meet such requests but cannot guarantee they will be able to do so. Special requests will not be accepted by Hurtigruten as part of the contractual agreement. Passengers on strict diets, such as vegan/vegetarian, may find that there is a limited choice.

  • Wheelchair Access & Special Needs
Hurtigruten is happy to welcome guests who are not fully mobile. All ships (except MS Lofoten) have at least one cabin equipped for travelers using a wheelchair. Guests who use a wheelchair must bring their own, standard sized, foldable chair. Guests who need assistance in order to get around may need to travel with a companion. Those who are able to navigate around the ship unaided in a wheelchair need not have a travel companion. Please discuss this matter with your booking agent.

In mainland Norwegian ports there is a ramp for embarkation/disembarkation.

Excursions have not been adapted specifically for passengers with walking difficulties. Please contact Hurtigruten, or the Tour Leader once onboard, for additional information regarding suitable excursions . It is important that you notify Hurtigruten of special requirements at the time of booking so they may be able to make the necessary arrangements for you.
