Traveling Spoon

Patty and her husband Enrique live in a beautiful ranch-style home near Lampa, in the countryside outside of Santiago. Her property boasts fruit and nut trees of every variety (from mandarin to fig, pomegranate to walnut) and a huge vegetable and herb garden. You will be welcomed with open arms and a bottle of Carménere into a house that is both modern and filled with old-world charm. The tall ceilings, gilded paintings, and Victorian furniture are magnificent, but the wood stove, inviting earth-tones, and greenery give the place a feeling of warmth alongside luxury. The kitchen is large and modern, with an island that allows everyone to congregate easily and without hindering the cooking process, and the shelves are heaped with the produce collected from Patty’s garden. Patty’s husband has spent much of his professional life traveling for work, as is evident by the displayed in art pieces from all over the world, from a traditional Austrian cuckoo clock to stone statues from China. Patty lived in Canada for 20 years and works as a systems analyst. Gather at Patty’s table to enjoy a sumptuous Chilean meal of traditional favorites. Patty is a skilled cook who loves to entertain - she has a reputation at work for hosting the best dinner parties all her coworkers hope for an invitation to her parties so they can taste her famous pastel de choclo or her husband’s asado! Patty will treat you to a meal of seasonal Chilean dishes using produce from her garden. She might serve pastel de choclo (a casserole similar to shepherd’s pie made with corn and chicken), chupe de mariscos (seafood stew), or cazuela (a typical Chilean soup). If you book a cooking experience, join Patty in her kitchen to learn how to prepare a traditional Chilean meal. Patty can offer you a demonstration or teach you in a hands-on lesson – just let her know your preference. She will teach you to make dishes that she and her family love. You will learn to make 1-2 traditional Chilean dishes before sitting down for the meal. As you cook together Patty will tell you about the ingredients she uses and about growing up in the kitchen with her mother and grandmother.

Santiago

Santiago is a huge city of nearly five million inhabitants surrounded by immense Andean peaks creating a spectacular backdrop. The city centre is quite manageable with a collection of wide avenues, squares and parks all laid out in a grid pattern. Chile has a distinctly European flavour and Santiago will bring this home to you as you visit the churches, monuments and museums all designed in a certain familiar style.
