Traveling Spoon

Rita, who learned to cook from books and classes, became so well-known for her Goan cooking that she has been mentioned in cookbooks such as John Gregory Smith's “Mighty Spice Express” and was featured in Fox Traveller's “Twist of Taste.” She lives in a lovely home located very close to the Goa airport. She has a beautiful outdoor space and garden that houses a studio kitchen where she teaches cooking classes. Your experience starts with a welcome drink and snacks, followed by your cooking class with Rita. During your cooking lesson, learn to cook 3-4 traditional Goan dishes in Rita's colorful outdoor kitchen studio. Your meal might start with sopa de abobara (pumpkin soup) and almyache dangar (mushroom cutlets), followed by tambdi bhaji (a traditional stir-fry of red amaranth leaves), khatkhatem (mixed vegetable curry), chicken or lamb vindaloo, and Indian flatbread. For dessert you may have manganem, a traditional sweet dessert in coconut milk. Rita also offers an optional market tour add-on during which you can visit a local market to discover regional Goan produce before returning home for your cooking class. Please note that Rita lives a few minutes away from the Goa airport – this experience would be perfect for travelers coming in or out of Goa.

Goa

Goa is the smallest state of the republic of India. It lies on the country's west coast, about 250 miles south of Bombay. The state covers an area of 1,429 square miles. Long, sandy beaches, fringed with coconut palms, make Goa a tropical paradise for visitors. Other tourist attractions are the colonial buildings from the 1500's, built when Goa was headquarters of Portugal's Asian empire. Today, Old Goa is half-hidden in jungle. Its population was severely affected by plague in the 1600's, and a new city was set up at Panaji, which contains the main government buildings. Margao is Goa's biggest commercial center. Mormugao, Goa's major port, has a fine harbor - one of the best on the west coast of India. The harbor is the focus of economic activity in Goa.
